Diggs puts Patriots, Vrabel in early predicament

Well, that didn't take long.

Mike Vrabel is facing his first test as the Patriots head coach, and it has absolutely nothing to do with the game played between the lines.

If you haven't been made aware, there is a viral video from this weekend that features the Patriots' most expensive wide receiver - their only pricey one, Stefon Diggs . In that video, Diggs is seen holding and distributing a mystery pink substance, instructing the bikini-clad women he gives the substance to to have fun. This video, which he seemed to know was being shot, will almost certainly be reviewed by the league, and who knows what they'll find and whether they'll choose to mete out punishment.

At best, Diggs is guilty of poor judgment. At worst? Arrogance. Either way, he put the team and his head coach between a rock and a hard place.

"Well, it's something that we're aware of, said Vrabel of the video. "Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field. We're hoping that with our time here on the field today, that when we don't have a script, and we're on the call periods, that we're making great decisions. The message will be the same for all our players, that we're trying to make great decisions. Any conversations that I've had with Stefon will remain between him, I and the club."

Diggs was not present at today's session, and as these are voluntary, he faces no consequences. He was, however, in attendance last week, at least for one day (the team had him appear in action on some of their social media posts).

"We're going to coach the guys that show up at 8:00 a.m., the ones that say, ‘Hey, I've got a situation, we'll be here at 8:05 a.m.,’ we'll coach those as well, said Vrabel when asked. "This is a voluntary part of our off-season program. Every player that's not here, which there aren't many, have been in communication with me and their position coaches."

The 31-year-old is rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in late October of last season. Diggs believes he'll be ready for Week 1, and while it's not impossible, that would be ahead of schedule for most skill players coming off the same injury. He started what he's teased as a series on his Instagram account detailing his comeback. No word yet on whether he'll include this chapter of his 'story' in the next episode

or if he'll take questions regarding what plays out on the video when (if?) we have the chance to speak with him at mandatory mini-camp (June 9-11). Generally, injured players are not required to speak.

The Patriots signed Diggs to a three-year deal worth upwards of $69 million this spring. However, the reality of the contract is that it is truly year-to-year, with $18.5 million in base pay, including a $12 million signing bonus and roster bonuses and incentives that could kick it up to $25 million in year one. There is only $1.7 million guaranteed in year two, and nothing is guaranteed in year three.
