Dillon Gabriel is doing the one thing the Browns need, and Kevin Stefanski quietly said it himself after win over the Dolphins

The Cleveland Browns are just one win short of matching their total from last season following Week 7 of the NFL season. Cleveland needed the performance it had on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, when it dominated in a 31-6 win. The Browns forced four turnovers, and that was ultimately the difference in the game. The offense left plenty to be desired in the rainy conditions, but quarterback Dillon Gabriel continues to do the one thing that’s an absolute must, which is protect the football. If the Browns can do that, they have an elite defense on the other side to lean on.

Dillon Gabriel once again showed he can protect the ball against the Dolphins

Cleveland hasn’t had a turnover on offense in the last three games — a big change from the first four weeks when Joe Flacco turned the ball over eight times. Gabriel may not be lighting up the stat sheet, but he’s excelling at the most important job a quarterback has: taking care of the football.

“[In the] first half especially, it was some tough conditions for both sides. I think you could see that in some of the handling of the football. But we were plus four today. I don’t think we’ve turned it over the last three weeks. And that’s a recipe for winning football,” Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski said after the game.

Gabriel finished 13-of-18 passing for 116 yards with no touchdowns. The rookie quarterback was sacked twice but managed the game well in rainy, windy conditions — and that kind of steady play will keep him on the field. With how inconsistent the Browns’ offense has been overall, the last thing they can afford is self-inflicted wounds. Penalties and turnovers plagued the team early in the season, but those giveaways have disappeared with Gabriel under center.

Through three starts, Cleveland’s rookie quarterback is completing 60 percent of his passes for 546 yards and three touchdowns. The Browns still lack explosive weapons at wide receiver — even top target Jerry Jeudy is having a down year — but at some point, they’ll need to stretch the field more. That’s the next step for Gabriel to take. For now, though, he’s excelling at the most important part of playing quarterback — protecting the football — and that means he’s far from the biggest problem on this offense. That’s real progress for Cleveland.
