Disney 'in discussions and negotiations' for NFL Sunday Ticket streaming rights, CEO says

The NFL Sunday Ticket package belongs to DirecTV through the 2022 season, but negotiations are already under way for 2023 and beyond. Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal reported in October that an extension of DirecTV's deal is probably on the way, but it will likely be a "non-exclusive" contract that makes way for streaming rights to be shopped elsewhere.

The availability of those streaming rights may soon mean NFL Sunday Ticket is on ESPN+, according to Disney CEO Bob Chapek.

"We are in discussions and negotiations with the NFL for those rights," Chapek said on an appearance on CNBC's "Fast Money." "We think they would make a particularly good addendum, if you will, to our ESPN+ service."

According to Daniel Kaplan of The Athletic, Disney isn't the NFL's first choice, though. Kaplan says the league would prefer for Apple to win those rights, which would open a new door for the NFL considering "Monday Night Football" is already a Disney product. There's also Amazon, which was called the front-runner for NFL Sunday Ticket streaming rights in a CNBC report in September.

NFL Sunday Ticket was launched as a DirecTV product in 1994 and offers subscribers the chance to watch out-of-market games live.
