Ryan Kennedy, the Detroit Lions fan that was assaulted in the Ford Field stands by Pittsburgh Steelers receiver DK Metcalf during last Sunday’s game, will hold a press conference with his attorneys on Friday to correct the narrative around the incident.
Kennedy and his attorneys will “address the assault, correct misinformation that has been publicly repeated as face and discuss the serious consequences Mr. Kennedy has faced” during Friday’s press conference, his legal team announced on Christmas Eve, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.
While officials at the game didn’t see the heated altercation behind the Steelers sideline and thus didn’t level any immediate disciplinary action, the NFL issued Metcalf a two-game suspension for the altercation, which was upheld upon appeal Tuesday. While on the sideline during Sunday’s game, CBS cameras caught Metcalf approach Kennedy in the stands, aggressively grab him by his shirt before swatting at Kennedy’s face and walking back to the Steelers bench. The game ended in a 29-24 win for Pittsburgh.
On Monday, NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero and former NFL receiver Chad Ochocinco both reported Metcalf’s actions were the result of Kennedy allegedly using derogatory and inflammatory language in regard to both Metcal and his mother. Kennedy vehemently denied those allegations through his attorneys in a statement released later Monday.
“Ryan Kennedy categorically denies using the ‘N-word,’ the ‘C-word,’ or any racial, misogynistic, or hate-based slur during the incident that occurred on December 21, 2025 at Ford Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers-Detroit Lions game,” the statement from Kennedy’s attorneys Sean Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm reads. “These allegations are completely false. At no point before, during, or after the incident did Mr. Kennedy use racial slurs or hate speech of any kind.
“The claims suggesting otherwise are untrue and are not supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, or any contemporaneous reporting. … Mr. Kennedy is a lifelong Detroit Lions football fan who attended the game lawfully and never anticipated becoming the subject of national attention, much less false accusations of racism. He respects the game, the players, and fellow fans — and he rejects hate and
discrimination in all forms.”
After the incident, Kennedy told the Detroit Free Press that he called Metcalf by his full name, DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf, which prompted the former Ole Miss standout to confront him.
“I called him that, and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt,” Kennedy said. “I’m a little shocked. Like everyone’s talking to me. I’m a little rattled, but I just want the Lions to win, baby.”
