PITTSBURGH — DK Metcalf had an impressive debut performance for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The organization’s new number one wide receive was targeted seven times in the team’s Week 1 victory, hauling in four receptions for 83 yards and displaying his incredible burst and athleticism in the process.
It was an impressive showing from the Steelers’ offense as they scored 34 points, but it’s just the beginning according to the team’s top pass-catcher. Speaking to the media ahead of their Week 2 matchup against his former team, the Seattle Seahawks, Metcalf praised their work while making a bold claim for the levels they can reach if they keep improving.
“We put up 30-plus points with our first time out, everybody,” he stated. “It was a good performance. It feels even better when you have something that you can work on the next week to get better. We do look forward to that. We have some things we can get better at and probably we could put 50 points on the board.”
Scoring 50 points is a rarity in the Steelers’ organization. They’ve done it a total of seven times since the franchise debuted, according to StatMuse. It’s happened just twice since the start of the new millennium.
The last time the Steelers accomplished this was seven years ago during the 2018 campaign. Taking on the Carolina Panthers in a November matchup, the Steelers put on an offensive clinic. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger completed 22 of 25 passing attempts for 328 yards and five touchdowns. Five different players caught a touchdown in the contest, including former franchise legend Antonio Brown and the still-active JuJu Smith-Schuster. They won that contest by a final score of 52-21.
What’s clear is that this unit has the chance to be a much better offensive group than in previous Steelers seasons. They surpassed the 30-point mark three times last year, twice during the year before, and just one individual time during the 2022 campaign. It’s been an abysmal run for the offense in Pittsburgh, but there’s rising hope that it can be undone in 2025.
This season however, the group is imposing. Led by a resurgent Aaron Rodgers at quarterback and Metcalf as a downfield threat, the Steelers were efficient and dangerous in their Week 1 win. With a few improvements, they could be even better. How much better is the big question, but if Metcalf’s analysis is any indication, there’s a ceiling still to be reached for this year’s Pittsburgh Steelers offense.
