Do Steelers want to move forward without Ben Roethlisberger?

For the most part, the song remains the same regarding the dance between the Pittsburgh Steelers and veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Those running the Steelers have made it clear Roethlisberger needs to restructure his deal and probably accept a reduction in pay to play for the club in 2021, while the soon-to-be 39-year-old has said he's willing to provide Pittsburgh with needed salary-cap relief.

It now appears some within the organization think it might be best if the two sides separate.

As noted by Matt Hladik of The Spun, NFL Network insider and AFC North analyst Aditi Kinkhabwala reported on Monday that the situation "is essentially turning into a really big game of chicken in Pittsburgh where the Steelers are almost daring Ben Roethlisberger to say something back."

Kinkhabwala continued: "But here’s the thing. The Steelers are not in consensus on what to do. From what I’ve been told, there is a very, very strong feeling in that building that it is time to simply move forward. While the Steelers still have Ben Roethlisberger, there is a bit of a limbo. Because even though there is a new offensive coordinator and a new quarterbacks coach, Ben Roethlisberger likes to play a particular way and that does not necessarily mesh with all the shifts and the motions that that new offensive coordinator Matt Canada would like to incorporate."

She also tweeted about the matter:

As of Monday evening, Roethlisberger still hasn't met with the Steelers about reworking a contract that carries a $41.25 million cap hit for the 2021 season. Pittsburgh would endure a $22.25 million cap hit if Roethlisberger retires or is released, but he's given no indication he wants the home playoff loss to the Cleveland Browns last month to be the final game of his career.

As Mike Jones wrote for USA Today, all signs currently point to Roethlisberger serving as Pittsburgh's starting quarterback in Week 1 next September.
