The New York Giants are currently attempting to salvage their season. Right now, they are 4-8 and have won their last two games. While things are going well today, this season has had its ugly moments.
This has caused some to wonder how things are in the locker room. Before yesterday’s game against the New England Patriots, all eyes were on New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Is anything going on between these two? Let’s dive into it.
According to a FOX Sports report by Jay Glazer, there may have been tension between Daboll and Martindale. Glazer discussed a possible “mutual parting of ways” between these two coaches at some point this season right before kickoff. Glazer also stated that sources inside the organization noted obvious tension between these two.
This has certainly been a frustrating season for the New York Giants. They were 2-8 at their lowest point this season after making the divisional round of the playoffs last season. It does not help that the Giants’ offense scores the fewest points per game in the NFL.
The New York Giants seem to be denying any truth to this report. It helps that they just won yesterday against the Patriots. On top of this, Wink Martindale’s defense allowed just seven points in this win.
As a result of this defensive performance, Brian Daboll gave Martindale the game ball after the win. If that was not enough, Daboll also addressed the rumors about there being tension between the two coaches after the game. He had this to say:
“I’d say the biggest argument that Wink (Martindale) and I have had is who has the last piece of pizza.”
For now, it appears that Daboll and Martindale have put a wet blanket on these tension rumors. It would be a surprise to see a coaching change right now considering the team is on a rare winning streak. The New York Giants also have a bye week coming up to rest and recover.
After that, they will host the Green Bay Packers. Despite being 4-8, they could find themselves right back in the playoff race after their bye week considering how bad the NFC currently is. In the meantime, there appear to be more quarterback questions than coaching questions for the Giants.
Will these two run it back together beyond this season? We will have to wait and see. However, if they can get the 2022 magic back, it may be worth a shot.
