Roughly three years after the San Francisco 49ers made quarterback Brock Purdy the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, they signed him to a five-year, $265M contract extension that included $181M in guarantees and a no-trade clause.
Purdy is now the undisputed highest-paid quarterback from his draft class, but that doesn't mean that he's forgotten that every team passed on grabbing him several years ago.
"It’s part of the game, man," Purdy recently said about putting pen to paper on his extension, per Vic Tafur of The Athletic. "Guys get paid. You have to go out and continue to perform. …It’s not thinking about, 'Oh, I’m the highest-paid player on the team.' It’s, 'What’s my read? What’s the base defensive front and the safety structure?' Go through my process and execute and have that chip on my shoulder to compete every play, every down. …That’s what’s gotten me here to this point in my career, and I don’t want to lose sight of that."
Purdy famously helped the 49ers reach a pair of NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl over his first two pro campaigns. He also emerged as a MVP finalist for the 2023 regular season.
Nevertheless, some noteworthy members of the NFL community suggested as the 2024 49ers limped to a 6-11 record that the club shouldn't pay an alleged "game manager" like a top-tier QB1. Former NFL wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh is among those who believe the Niners overpaid to make Purdy happy ahead of the franchise's summer break.
Additionally, league executives, coaches and scouts surveyed by ESPN did not rank Purdy as a top-10 quarterback for the 2025 season. That said, he seems uninterested in conversations regarding whether or not he is overrated or underrated.
"I’m a faithful person, so seeing where God has allowed me to land and flourish, I’m more grateful than anything," Purdy added. "Yeah, I was drafted last. The 'Mr. Irrelevant' title I think about every once in a while, not in like a bad way, but, 'Hey, man, you were drafted last, and this is where you’ve come from.'"
Purdy and the 49ers open the upcoming season with a matchup at the Seattle Seahawks. As of Thursday morning, ESPN Bet had San Francisco as a 2.5-point favorite for that contest.
