Does Giants' Brian Daboll already trust Jaxson Dart more than Russell Wilson?

New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart sparked some interesting sports-talk conversations after he produced an impressive pro debut in the club's preseason opener at the Buffalo Bills on Saturday.

During Monday's edition of NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" program, former player and current analyst Manti Te’o suggested that Giants head coach Brian Daboll could want to play Dart over veteran Russell Wilson sooner than was thought ahead of the second weekend of August.

"Brian Daboll runs a totally different offense with [Dart] as quarterback than Russell Wilson," Te’o explained, as shared by Chris Franklin of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "If you watch that game, Russell Wilson runs a traditional hand the ball off, play-action, let’s get the ball downfield. When Jaxson Dart comes in the game, it’s more like college, and there are more (run-pass options)."

Wilson started against the Bills and completed six of seven passes for 28 yards. To compare, Dart connected on 12-of-19 attempts for 154 yards and one touchdown. He also finished the game with a team-high 24 rushing yards on three carries.

For an article published on Sunday night, Tyler Sullivan of CBS Sports wrote that "Dart had the most impressive outing of any rookie quarterback" over the opening week of preseason play. On Monday, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News said that Dart may have earned first-team practice reps for the Giants' joint practices against the New York Jets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Those two teams will face off in a preseason matchup this coming Saturday.

For what it's worth, Dan Duggan of The Athletic insisted in an article updated on Monday that "Dart’s debut won’t make the Giants scrap their plan to open the season with 14th-year veteran Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback" for their Week 1 game at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7. That said, it sounds like some think Wilson could find himself playing for his starting job against Washington and during the Giants' Week 2 game at the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 14.

The Giants' home opener is a "Sunday Night Football" showdown versus the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 21.

"It’s going to be interesting for me to see Brian Daboll and how he kind of plays this, because obviously, he has a certain flavor that he likes to run with Russell compared to Jaxson Dart," Te’o added during the show segment. "For me, it’s a matter of when do you start to implement those things because there are definitely two different approaches."

Leonard pointed out that "the Giants have shown no confidence or interest in" playing presumed backup Jameis Winston in meaningful games this fall. Thus, one could assume Dart is well on his way to entering September as Big Blue's QB2.
