Dolphins are on Life Support
Another week after a Miami Dolphins beatdown. This time from the lowly Cleveland Browns.
By now, all Dolphins fans know how horribly the team played in all phases of the game.
At 1-6, the season is over, and the entire world knows now that the 2025 Dolphins are just a terrible team.
Perhaps the worst in the NFL. The team is definitely on life support. Is it time to pull the plug?
I won’t go into the blame game since I recently wrote an article on DolphinsTalk (The Ladder of Blame) about that very subject.
The biggest question for me is, what now? After last week’s loss to the Chargers, Tua reminded us that in 2021, they were 1-7 and turned it around to 9-8. That was under former Head Coach Brian Flores.
This team and coaching staff aren’t anywhere near the caliber of that 2021 team. There is very little chance of a big turnaround. This begs the question, where do we go from here?
Mike McDaniel, at the time of this article, seems to live another day. He said he is going to make roster changes. He wants to win. For the first time in my life as a Miami Dolphins fan, I believe losing right now is the best thing for the team.
In 2019, they were (allegedly) tanking on purpose. This year seems to be an unintentional tanking. Mike may have the best intentions for the remainder of the season, but he can only do so much with this poor roster.
Based on the play yesterday and comments from various writers, it seems the team may have given up on their coach. As cries come screaming in from the fan base for Mike’s head on a platter, do we want this? Interim coaches seldom turn around a bad team.
But if someone comes in and wins a few games and puts Miami out of a top 5 draft pick, is that a good thing? No one wants to sit through another 1-16 season and subsequent rebuild. But this season is fairly meaningless at this point. Chris Grier totally botched the first rebuild.
Hopefully, the new General Manager will do a good job. Oddly enough, this past weekend, Grier was at the Oklahoma-South Carolina game evaluating John Mateer and LaNorris Sellers. It would be insanity for Stephen Ross to allow Grier a shot at a second rebuild.
Another question is, who do you turn the team over to? Anthony Weaver has been the name kicked around as the coach to fill in should McDaniel get fired.
The primary reason this team is struggling is that its defense can’t stop the run. So, is Ross going to turn the team over to the guy who is causing it to lose? This offensive playbook is so ridiculously complicated that would the next play caller even want to use most of it?
Quinn Ewers replaced Tua in the 4th quarter. Tua’s play this year has been just awful. He now leads the league in interceptions, his passer rating a paltry 80.
Reports of a thumb and hip issue have been brought up. He needs to be benched for a while and give Ewers a chance to show what he has got. I pity any quarterback who has to play behind this God-awful offensive line, but someone’s got to do it. And since we all know what Zach Wilson can do, let’s go with Ewers.
