Dolphins assistant Wes Welker hopes to take Jaylen Waddle 'to the next level'

Wes Welker hasn't been on the job as the Dolphins wide receivers coach long, but he's already got big plans.

Welker discussed breakout star receiver Jaylen Waddle with the media on Wednesday, saying he hopes to get even more out of the rookie in his second season.

"That kid is top notch," Welker said, per Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. "Ton of talent. Speed. Passion for the game. That’s what you want to work with. I’m excited to work with him and hopefully take him to the next level."

The Dolphins are already expected to take a leap offensively under new head coach Mike McDaniel, who Welker worked with for the 49ers. Waddle would be a key part of unlocking that, as he proved to be a blossoming star playmaker in his rookie season.

The flashes he showed haven't only excited Welker. McDaniel gushed about Waddle's ability earlier this month during an interview with The Dan LeBatard Show with Stugotz.

After being selected sixth overall in last year's draft out of Alabama, Waddle hauled in 104 catches for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns in his rookie season. He logged only two rushing attempts but scored a touchdown on one, and McDaniel hinted in the aforementioned interview he could see more work on the ground moving forward.
