Dolphins balance rest and preparation during early bye

The Miami Dolphins have reached their bye week, but center Aaron Brewer does not want anyone confusing time away from games with permission to stop working.

Miami’s break arrives after five consecutive losses and before a division-heavy stretch that will help determine whether the season can be salvaged. Players plan to recover physically and reconnect with family, but several also expect to remain close to the facility, the weight room and the playbook.

“Just stay proactive,” Brewer said. “Don’t let the bye week think like that it’s a literal bye week of just sitting around not doing nothing. Stay moving, stay in your playbook. It’s a time to get ahead on the next week.”

Brewer said balance is important. Players need space after the physical and mental strain of five games, but the Dolphins cannot afford to return unprepared.

“Get away from it a little bit, relax, but also keep moving, stay in your playbook, and stay prepared for next week,” he said.

Take Up Another Sport

Wide receiver Malik Washington’s plan is simpler.

“Rest and recover,” Washington said. “Probably go bowling.”

Linebacker Jacob Rodriguez said he expects to spend time with his family during the first bye week of his NFL career. Even that trip will include attention to the work waiting when Miami returns.

“I don’t know, I’ll see how this first one goes,” Rodriguez said. “I tried to talk to a lot of guys, but I’ll probably just see family and just try to reset to get going for the rest of the year. But I’ll just try to tighten up everything I can, get the body back.”

Cornerback Chris Johnson plans to remain around the team’s building. With more time than a normal game week allows, he wants to isolate weaknesses in his technique and address them before Miami resumes play.

“Really just staying here, kind of just taking this week to self-evaluate, kind of work on things,” Johnson said. “We have a lot more time, work on things that we’re not personally good at.”

Johnson said that could mean lifting or concentrating on specific techniques that have slipped during the first five weeks.

“I’m going to be in here in the building, whether it’s getting a lift in or working on different kind of techniques that I feel like I’ve been lacking over the last few weeks just to come back and be prepared,” he said.

The varied plans share a common purpose. The Dolphins need healthier bodies, clearer minds and better individual execution after the bye. Johnson wants extra work. Rodriguez wants family time and a reset. Washington may head to a bowling alley. Brewer’s instruction applies to all of them: Recover, but do not disconnect.

For a 0-5 team, the bye is not an escape from the season. It is a chance to prepare for what is left of it.
