Dolphins’ De’Von Achane Suffers ACL Tear

De’Von Achane’s injury from Week 3 led to concerns about a lengthy absence. The Dolphins running back will indeed be out for the remainder of the season.

Achane suffered an ACL tear yesterday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and ESPN’s Adam Schefter report. Early indications pointed to this being a possibility, and today’s news comes as confirmation. The rebuilding Dolphins will be notably shorthanded on offense the rest of the way.

Achane exited yesterday’s loss to the Chiefs, and that game will now represent his final action for 2026. The former third-round pick operated as an offensive focal point during the 2024 and ’25 campaigns in particular, and he enjoyed a career year last season. After averaging 5.7 yards per attempt and notching 1,838 scrimmage yards, Achane was a Pro Bowler in 2025. A heavy workload on the ground and in the passing game was going to be in store for this year.

Instead, Achane’s attention will now turn to a lengthy recovery process. The 24-year-old witnessed considerable overhaul in terms of Miami’s roster this offseason with a full-blown rebuild commencing under general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley. Few financial investments were made to in-house players, but Achane represented an exception on that front by signing a four-year, $64MM extension.

As a result of that deal, the Texas A&M product is on the books through 2030. Achane is already owed $12MM in guarantees for next season, and he is set to see a portion of his 2028 compensation vest next spring. A central role in Miami’s offense should await Achane once he is healthy, but for now the Dolphins will be shorthanded in the backfield. Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon are on the 53-man roster, while Jarquez Hunter is on the practice squad.

Hunter – recently acquired via trade when the Dolphins sent wideout Tutu Atwell back to the Rams – has yet to log a regular-season NFL carry. Wright and Gordon, meanwhile, have managed a total of 231 rushing attempts between them. A backfield addition may wind up being necessary in the near future for Miami. Otherwise, a decidedly inexperienced setup will be in place to finish the year.

Sunday’s loss dropped Miami to 0-3 on the year. A string of wins is not expected based on the team’s roster construction, but losing Achane will deal a considerable blow to the Dolphins’ chances of rebounding from their start to the campaign. An offense already lacking in established skill-position options will operate at less than full strength the rest of the way.
