Dolphins Did the Right Thing by Firing Chris Grier Now
Part one of the Dolphins’ rebuild has been taken care of with the news of the team parting ways with long-time front office executive Chris Grier.
Grier took nine years to stabilize the franchise, and while there were some bright spots, which included the 2023 season, ultimately, his tenure as a GM was not good enough.
He was responsible for assembling teams for three different coaches during his tenure as the key decision-maker, and in all three eras, it began and ended the same way.
It has a disjointed roster filled with major holes and in need of a reset.
Grier was able to convince Stephen Ross that he should oversee the rebuild that started in 2019, but after that came to a screeching halt this year, it was time to let him go.
And thankfully, it happened before the trade deadline.
Could you imagine if you allowed Grier to stay and put himself over the organization by holding onto assets like Bradley Chubb, Jaelan Phillips, Rasul Douglas, and Minkah Fitzpatrick just because it could help Grier potentially keep his job?
That would have been a pretty selfish move.
It is pretty evident to every fan around the league that this Dolphins team is going absolutely nowhere.
Not only are they bad on the field with a 2-7 record, but they have also been completely mismanaged from a salary cap standpoint, as well, with many veterans on the team being overpaid and past their prime.
There is also the issue of adding players with hefty injury histories, which dilutes the depth of the team.
What was the need to extend and give a raise to Jalen Ramsey?
Why did he sign someone like James Daniels, who had missed most of the previous season?
And do not even get me started on the Tua extension.
Granted, there were some shrewd trades in Grier’s time, but the negative roster construction decisions far outweigh the positives.
Grier already fumbled an opportunity to get one rebuild right.
Giving him a chance to do another one would’ve continued to set this franchise back.
Entering 2026, Miami will be entering a new era for the franchise.
Thankfully, this time without Grier leading the charge.
