Uncertainty surrounded the Miami Dolphins all summer after the team limped to a disappointing 8-9 record in 2024. Injuries and team disconnect derailed what was once among the NFL's most potent offenses. Only faint optimism remained that the team could return to that level.
Following the 'Fins Week 1 disaster against the Indianapolis Colts, though, it's clear those doubts weren't unfounded. Miami mustered just one touchdown in the team's 33-8 loss as Tagovailoa continued to look like a shell of his former self. The blowout only fueled Tyreek Hill's prominent frustrations with the franchise.
Hill posted just 40 yards on four catches in the loss. But while age is quickly becoming a factor in the 31-year-old's career, this low line wasn't on him. The eight-time Pro Bowler is still capable of superstar performances — he just needs better quarterback play.
As storybook as it sounds, there may not be two parties in the league who need each other more than Hill and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Chiefs were already down their top receiver as Rashee Rice serves a six-game suspension to begin the season. But Kansas City's receiver room really thinned out after Xavier Worthy collided with Travis Kelce on the team's first drive of the season, suffering a dislocated shoulder.
From there, the Chiefs simply didn't have the firepower to keep up with a red-hot Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. The team relied heavily on a veteran cast of Marquise Brown, Juju Smith-Schuster and Kelce. Even with an impressive performance from Brown, the offense was missing some juice.
With Rice out for the next month and Worthy now sidelined, the Chiefs need to act quickly. As unlikely as it may seem, Kansas City's season could get out of hand if the franchise fails to address its glaring need.
A talent of Hill's caliber is rarely available on the trade market. Had Miami looked somewhat competitive in its Week 1 bout, it wouldn't even be a discussion.
After the Dolphins failed to show any life, though, the franchise could be headed for a full-fledged rebuild. That includes shipping the five-time All-Pro to the highest bidder. For the sake of their season, the Chiefs should make sure it's them.
Patrick Mahomes is capable of producing with any receiver room. As long as he's suiting up in a Chiefs uniform, the team will be competitive. But for a franchise that has won three Super Bowls in the last six seasons, simply being competitive isn't enough.
Now down their top two receivers, the Chiefs have been presented with a golden opportunity. A reunion with the franchise's former top receiver would not only re-solidify the Chiefs' status as a contender, but it'd also prove that Hill still has plenty of gas left in the tank.
