Dolphins GM addresses Tua Tagovailoa status after Jalen Hurts deal

Miami Dolphins general manager Chris Grier has suggested that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts receiving a massive contract means little as it pertains to any talks with Miami starter Tua Tagovailoa.

"For us, at the end of the day, it’s a piece of information," Grier said at his Wednesday news conference about Hurts' agreement, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "We monitor it. But there’s going to be other quarterbacks coming up still, who knows how soon? So the market will fluctuate based off those. So, for us, happy for him and the Eagles getting it done. But at the end of the day, it doesn’t really move our needle until we have to do something."

Hurts and the Eagles reportedly agreed to a five-year extension worth up to $255M with $179.3M guaranteed after the 24-year-old flirted with earning regular-season Most Valuable Player honors and guided his club to a Super Bowl berth. While Hurts was set to enter the final campaign of his rookie contract, Tagovailoa's rights are attached to the Dolphins through the 2024 season after Miami picked up his fifth-year option.

There remain serious concerns about Tagovailoa's short-term and long-term health after he suffered at least two reported concussions this past season and spent more than a month in the concussion protocol following a Christmas Day game. The 25-year-old raised eyebrows throughout the NFL community when he admitted Wednesday he considered retirement due to worries related to his history of head injuries.

Grier added that he hopes Tagovailoa will prove to be the club's "successful, long-term" answer at the sport's most important position.

"And at the end of the day, we made this decision and decided to move forward in the offseason to get going," Grier said about picking up Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option.

Grier and company have seemingly ruled out a move for Baltimore Ravens star Lamar Jackson while he's on the non-exclusive franchise tag, but it sounds like Miami is in no rush to lock Tagovailoa down via an extension anytime soon.
