Dolphins HC Mike McDaniel could make desperate move to save his job

Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is facing as uncertain a future as ever with the team in the wake of Sunday's embarrassing loss, and there is a chance he could make a radical change in hopes of saving his job.

The Dolphins fell to 1-6 on Sunday with their 31-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns. QB Tua Tagovailoa turned the ball over four times, and Miami did not score a single point in the second half. Many people felt that the Dolphins looked like they had completely checked out after falling behind early.

Tagovailoa has now thrown for 1,313 yards, 11 touchdowns and an NFL-worst 10 interceptions through seven games. That is not the performance the Dolphins were hoping for when they signed him to a four-year, $212.4M contract extension before last season.

Mike McDaniel hints at possible changes

During his postgame news conference, McDaniel suggested that he could bench certain players heading into Week 8.

"There's a lot of guys who will have an important work week, because if you are negatively affecting the football team routinely, I don't have a choice but to assess a different player," McDaniel told reporters. "I have to coach a lot better as well, so we're gonna find out who and what we're made of."

It is unclear what McDaniel would describe as "routinely" impacting the team in a negative way, but it is worth noting that Tagovailoa has six interceptions over the past two weeks. The former first-round pick has also thrown for 205 or fewer yards in five of seven games.

Could Tua Tagovailoa be benched?

McDaniel was also asked what his conversation with Tagovailoa will be like in the wake of the loss to the Browns. The coach said two of the interceptions that Tagovailoa threw in the game were "extremely preventable" and that the two will look through film together. McDaniel also said he is not ruling out any changes.

"Everything is on the table, when you go to a game you fully know you have the capability to win and get handed a very, very humbling loss," McDaniel said, via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "There’s no if and or buts about it, guys need to be professionals and step up to the plate, and every person on our team, if you’re saying it’s me, it’s you."

McDaniel was openly unhappy with the way Tagovailoa criticized some teammates following Miami's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6. Of course, McDaniel could wind up losing his job before he even has a chance to strip Tagovailoa of a starting position, if the coach is considering going that route.
