Dolphins incredibly ‘active’ on waivers after adding 7 players

The Miami Dolphins weren’t just active on the waiver wire; they were incredibly aggressive, and their roster construction might not be finished.

Via Adam Schefter, Miami claimed seven players: quarterback Brady Cook, defensive backs Marcellas Dial, Taylor Reese and Julius Wood, offensive tackles Chukwuebuka Godrick and Jarrett Kingston, and tight end Justin Jolly.

Seven waiver claims is a big number for one major reason: Every claimed player goes onto Miami’s 53-man roster. The Dolphins can’t claim these players and immediately stash them on the practice squad. This means more roster moves are coming after the team announced its 53-man roster on Sunday.

Miami will have to create room for its new additions, potentially resulting in several players who initially survived roster cuts suddenly finding themselves on the practice squad, IR, or released altogether.

Cook is the most recognizable addition after previously playing for the New York Jets. The former Missouri quarterback had a notable college career but hasn’t established himself as a legitimate NFL starting option. Cook will compete with Kyle McCord for the backup role. McCord was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Dolphins on Sunday to be the backup. However, adding Cook assures that they have some extra depth in case things go south. Quinn Ewers was also traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday.

It was definitely a wild weekend for that position in Miami. It’s unclear if that will help Malik Willis or not.

The Dolphins clearly viewed several players around the league as upgrades over options they already had in the building. Now comes the difficult part.
