Dolphins’ Malik Willis Has Bigger Problem Than His Numbers

With the Miami Dolphins 0-2 to start the season, many of the team’s fans have already begun looking toward the 2027 NFL Draft.

The draft class is expected to feature several of the best available college quarterbacks.

But Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis hasn’t been one of the team’s biggest issues. Bleacher Report agrees, ranking Willis 29th in its re-ranking of every NFL team’s quarterback room following injuries to Jayden Daniels and Jaxson Dart.

“His play this season has been acceptable, given the Miami Dolphins’ young and below-average supporting cast,” Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox wrote.

“Willis has thrown for 417 yards and one touchdown, with one interception and an 83.5 QB rating. He has also rushed for 45 yards and a score. While he’s saddled with an overall lack of talent in Miami and has underwhelming numbers this season, Willis’ ceiling remains high, as evidenced by the 134.6 passer rating he posted with the Green Bay Packers. The depth behind Willis leaves even more to be desired than Willis’ 2026 production. Kyle McCord has never seen NFL action. Brady Cook has gone 0-4 as a starter with a 55.4 QB rating.”

Willis has been sacked nine times through two games

Willis has just eight career NFL starts. After the Tennessee Titans selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, he started three games. However, Willis struggled, throwing for 350 yards and three interceptions, and Tennessee shipped him to the Green Bay Packers, where he backed up Jordan Love for two seasons.

The 2026 season will show whether Willis can become the Dolphins’ franchise quarterback. But it is hard to grade him with so few proven receivers and so little talent around him.

Willis has been sacked nine times in two games, which is the most in the NFL. According to ESPN Research, that is the most any Dolphins quarterback has been sacked through the first two games of a season since Jay Cutler in 2017.

Miami will have the next 15 games to evaluate Willis. But his supporting cast must play better for a proper assessment.
