The Miami Dolphins have been rumored to be exploring the trade of their 2024 Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. In 2024, Smith was one of the best Dolphins receiving options for Tua Tagovailoa, but the rumors could ship him off elsewhere as Smith looks for a new contract.

During a press conference ahead of another day of OTAs, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel shared his reaction to the Smith trade speculation. The press conference where McDaniel praised Smith was featured on the Dolphins' YouTube page.

Jonnu is a very important player and person to me and the guys. One thing that we can stand on is his professionalism and how he goes about his business. There are times when business can play a part, for sure, and a team can make it as complicated as they would like. If they have a lot of time to focus on what's going on with Jonnu, I would encourage them to focus on their own game. Fortunately, I haven't had to have those conversations."

Smith is in the final year of a two-year, $8 million deal. He's looking for a new contract, and the Dolphins have balked at making that offer. With the two sides at an impasse, the Dolphins have looked for trades of Smith around the NFL.

While tight end isn't the highest priority position in the NFL, Smith would likely generate interest around the league. He's coming off a career-best season at 29 years old, and in his 8th season in the NFL.

Smith had 88 receptions on 111 targets for 884 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. His production was enough to earn him his first Pro Bowl nod in his career. It was the best season of his career, and has led him to look for an increased contract.

McDaniels utilized Smith to his fullest in 2024, and he was a great scheme fit for the Dolphins. If he leaves, not only would Smith need to adjust to a new scheme, but McDaniels would be disappointed.

At the end of his press conference, McDaniels was asked once again about Smith's potential of being on the team come the start of 2025.

McDaniel made a simple comment, summarizing his feelings on a potential Smith trade amid recent speculation. He said, "I want Jonnu on the team."
