Dolphins Obtain a Late-Round Pick in 2027 NFL Draft

The Miami Dolphins have upped their draft capital in the 2027 NFL Draft from seven selections to eight, according to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson. Jackson reported earlier this week that Miami met the (unknown) conditions needed to net the conditional seventh-round pick it received in a trade with the New York Giants last year.

The Dolphins acquired the aforementioned seventh-round pick along with tight end Darren Waller — who came out of retirement to suit up for Miami — in exchange for a sixth-round choice in April’s draft. Taking such a gamble on Waller, a former Pro Bowler, made sense at the time, given how little the Dolphins had to give up, but it ultimately didn’t pay off.

The 33-year-old sat out almost half the season because of injuries, and Jackson reported around a month ago that the expectation is the free agent won’t return to Miami. Across nine appearances and three starts for the Dolphins in the 2025 campaign, he totaled 283 yards receiving (his fewest in a single campaign since 2018) on 24 receptions.

While the Dolphins’ potential low-risk, high-reward rolling of the dice on Waller didn’t pan out, fans needn’t dwell on that and have plenty to be excited about when looking at their draft capital in 2027. On top of the late-round pick they officially obtained just recently, they possess their own picks in every one of the opening six rounds, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers’ fifth-rounder.

The Steelers traded that pick over to the Dolphins as part of the blockbuster move that re-routed tight end Jonnu Smith and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to Pittsburgh.

Things are shaping up for the Dolphins to be active come draft time in 2027 after they were highly active this year’s draft as well. It seems like starting at the top, the Dolphins are committed to rebuilding this team through the draft, and here’s hoping that strategy pays off.
