Dolphins’ offensive line suffers a new training camp injury, and this one clouds team’s Week 1 availability and starting five plans

The Miami Dolphins successfully avoided one injury scare on Saturday afternoon but were unable to completely dodge the attrition of football. Star pass rusher Jaelan Phillips required medical attention during Saturday's practice, but managed to flash the fans a thumbs up on the field and eased everyone's minds after the fact — it was just a bruise.

The team's offensive line was not as lucky. On the same day that one of the key cogs of last year's unit, center Aaron Brewer, returned from a "soft tissue" lower body injury, the team practiced without their starting right tackle, Austin Jackson. And, per a report from NFL Network's Cam Wolfe, the Dolphins will continue to be without Jackson this preseason.

Dolphins right tackle Austin Jackson to miss "weeks", hope is for a Week 1 return

The new report on right tackle Austin Jackson doesn't paint a rosy picture and it is a continuation of some frustrating trends with the former first-round draft choice. Jackson missed the second half of the 2024 season due to a knee injury and missed nearly all of the 2022 season with two separate injuries. His rehab appeared to be well on course from his season-ender in 2024 — but he's enduring a new issue.

The news came from Wolfe during a hit with the NFL Network programming, which discloses that Jackson will miss "weeks" on account of a lower extremity injury. A return in time for the start of the regular season is on the table.

"The right tackle, Austin Jackson, didn't practice today. I'm told that he has a 'lower extremity injury' and he's gonna miss some time in training camp with that injury. The hope is that he is back for Week 1 versus Indianapolis but Miami will have to get through training camp without its right tackle — a blow to their offensive line depth, for sure."

If Jackson were to miss a few weeks, now would be the time for it to happen. The bummer, of course, is the lost time between he and new right guard James Daniels — who signed with the team this spring in free agency. Miami's offensive scheme offers a lot of tools and calls for the line, but the communication and recognition of opposing fronts must be consistent across the board for the Dolphins' offense to operate optimally.

Jackson and Daniels will now need to work overtime off the field to ensure they're seeing things the same way and then hope that it translates for Week 1. That is, of course, assuming Jackson is back and ready to roll by then.
