The Miami Dolphins found great success in their offense from a place they were not necessarily expecting to. Tight end Jonu Smith was a bright spot for the Dolphins last season, but he is going on 30, he is not a good blocker, and the rest of the Dolphins' tight end room is shaky at best. These are all reasons that Brent Sobleski gave in his article on Bleacher Report for why the Dolphins should sign a certain undrafted free agent to the 53-man roster.
The UDFA that he is talking about is Jalin Conyers from Texas Tech. Sobleski mentions that Conyers is fantastic in both run and pass blocking situations, which would make him a perfect fit behind Smith, who is mainly a pass catcher. He also mentions that Conyers still has potential as a receiving threat and could end up being a really well-rounded tight end with the right coaching.
Conyers started his career at Oklahoma, where he redshirted and then transferred to Arizona State, where he played the next three seasons of his college career before transferring to Texas Tech for his senior year. He recorded 30 receptions for 320 yards and five touchdowns, which was considered his second-best season besides his sophomore season, where he had a career high 38 catches for a career high 422 yards and tied for a career high five touchdowns.
Although it may seem underwhelming, his stats do not show anything close to his full impact on the team. Having Conyers line up is like having an extra offensive lineman on the field, and he is a great red zone target. He was mainly the backup tight end throughout his career, but his versatility and value always helped him find his way onto the field one way or another.
The Dolphins lost their backup tight end from last year, Durham Smythe, to the Bears, and he played a very similar role to what Conyers would play. He was a blocking first tight end who could also get involved in the passing game when needed, so replacing him with a young version with more potential seems like the perfect fit.
Conyers was given a sixth to seventh round grade but ended up going undrafted. The Dolphins then made the call to bring him to training camp and it could end up being one of the best decisions the Dolphins made this offseason. Conyers could come in and instantly be the backup tight end for the Dolphins and be a major contributor in just his rookie year as an UDFA.
