Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa ruled out for Week 3, Jacoby Brissett to start

The Miami Dolphins have officially ruled quarterback Tua Tagovailoa out for Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, ESPN reported Wednesday.

Tagovailoa was knocked out of last week's game against the Buffalo Bills with fractured ribs. The second-year QB reportedly tried practicing this week in an effort to play, but the team had to shut him down for his own good.

"He's a tough kid," head coach Brian Flores said. "He wants to be out there with his teammates, but this is the right move for him from a health standpoint."

Tagovailoa is currently considered "day-to-day" with the injury and it has not been indicated whether he will have to go on the injured list.

Miami now turns to backup Jacoby Brissett to run the offense against Vegas. Brissett tallied 169 passing yards and an interception after entering Sunday's game, which the Dolphins ultimately lost 35-0. The North Carolina State product has completed 59.6% of his 1,023 pass attempts for 6,628 yards and 31 touchdowns against 14 interceptions through 32 NFL starts.

Brissett told the press after Sunday's loss he considers himself a starter, not Tua's backup. Flores, who didn't hear the comments firsthand, cautiously applauded the QB's confidence.

"It's good to hear that, and I think guys have confidence in Jacoby and his ability to lead the offense," the coach said, via ESPN. "But we have to prepare the right way and work throughout the week to put ourselves in a position to execute."
