Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa tops jersey sales among rookies

Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a polarizing figure, one who was benched in favor of journeyman veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick on multiple occasions but also somebody who offered some indications he could be the club's signal-caller of the future.

One can't question Tagovailoa's popularity following his first pro season, however.

As Cameron Wolfe reported for ESPN, Tagovailoa was responsible for the league's third-highest-selling jersey and the top-selling jersey among all rookies. Ahead of the 22-year-old on the overall list were Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Reigning regular-season MVP and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was fourth, followed by Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson.

On the rookie list, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow sat second behind Tagovailoa. Uncrowned Rookie of the Year and Los Angeles Chargers first-year pro Justin Herbert was third.

Tagovailoa appeared in 10 games for the Dolphins and completed 64.1% of his passes (186-of-290) for 1,814 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. According to ESPN stats, Tagovailoa was 26th in the NFL in both passer rating (87.1) and total QBR (52.7).

According to Garrett Stepien of 247Sports, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Sunday that the Dolphins could trade Tagovailoa to the Houston Texans to acquire disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson.
