Dolphins reportedly hiring Ravens' Anthony Weaver as their new defensive coordinator
Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

It appears that Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins finally have their man.

Per multiple outlets, Baltimore Ravens defensive line coach and associate head coach Anthony Weaver is finalizing a deal with the Dolphins to become the team's new defensive coordinator.

Weaver comes to the Dolphins with a world of momentum, having just coached up one of the best units in football in the Ravens' defensive front.  DL Justin Madubuike had a breakthrough season under Weaver's tutelage, racking up 13 sacks on the way to second-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Weaver, who played with the Ravens from 2002 to 2005, broke into the NFL coaching ranks in 2012 as an assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets.  He thereafter served as defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Houston Texans from 2013 through 2019.  He added defensive coordinator to his duties with the Texans in 2020.

He landed with the Ravens in 2021 as their defensive line coach.  The Ravens allowed the fewest and third-fewest rushing yards per game in the league in 2021 and 2022, respectively.  As such, the Dolphins will be getting a coordinator who knows very well how to shut down the running game at the line of scrimmage and force teams to throw.

Weaver also comes to the Dolphins with experience as a defensive coordinator, having handled the role in 2020 for Houston.  There shouldn't be any learning curve for him in that regard.

If 2023 proved anything, it's that Miami simply needs to get tougher in order to keep up with the top teams in the league.  Bringing in a coach like Weaver appears to fit that need like a glove.
