Dolphins Sign EDGE Clelin Ferrell

The Raiders took Ferrell fourth overall in 2019, but the decision did not go according to plan for former general manager Mike Mayock or ex-head coach Jon Gruden. Although Ferrell excelled at Clemson, where he totaled 50 tackles for loss and 27 sacks in three seasons, that success has not transferred to the NFL. The 6-foot-4, 265-pounder has racked up just 29 TFL and 21 sacks in seven years and 98 games in the pros. His four-year, 58-game Raiders tenure included 15 TFL and 10 sacks.

Also a 49er, Commander and Charger, Ferrell has chipped in between 3.5 and four sacks in three straight seasons. After Ferrell failed to survive Washington’s final roster cuts last August, he went without a deal until he joined the Chargers’ practice squad in late September. The Bolts elevated Ferrell to their roster for a Week 5 meeting with the Commanders, but he only played 17 defensive snaps in a 27-10 loss. They cut him a week and a half later, leading Ferrell back to San Francisco for a second stint. He previously posted a 17-start, 3.5-sack season with the 49ers in 2023.

Ferrell did not make any start in eight appearances in his return to San Francisco last year, but he did log 24 tackles (four TFL), five quarterback hits and four sacks. Although Ferrell recorded decent counting stats across 233 defensive snaps, Pro Football Focus ranked his overall performance fifth-worst among 111 qualified edge defenders.

Officially on his way out of San Francisco again, Ferrell will attempt to earn a spot on a Miami team in the early stages of a major rebuild. Looking for complements to Chop Robinson, the new regime of general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and defensive-minded head coach Jeff Hafley made modest offseason investments along the edge, where they handed one-year, $1.4MM deals to Joshua Uche, David Ojabo and Cameron Goode. Ferrell, who presumably signed a similar or less expensive pact, will now join Robinson, Uche, Ojabo, Goode, fourth-round rookie Trey Moore, seventh-rounder Max Llewellyn and the rest of the Dolphins’ edge defenders in camp.
