Dolphins sign ex-Raiders No. 4 overall pick

The Miami Dolphins made an under-the-radar roster move before the start of their training camp on Tuesday at Baptist Health Training Complex.

The Dolphins are looking forward to a fresh start after a forgettable campaign, which saw them miss the playoffs for the second straight year due to a 7-10 record. With quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, and linebacker Bradley Chubb now gone and a new coach in Jeff Hafley, it truly feels like a new chapter for the Dolphins.

Amid the offseason overhaul, Miami added defensive end Clelin Ferrell, as reported by The 33rd Team’s Ari Meirov. Ferrell spent time last season with the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers.

The Dolphins waived defensive tackle Kahlil Saunders to make room for Ferrell.

The 29-year-old enforcer was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the No. 4 pick in 2019. The choice was widely panned, as Ferrell was projected to be a late first-rounder or an early second-rounder. He was selected ahead of other prospects at his position, including Brian Burns, Montez Sweat, Zach Allen, and Maxx Crosby.

While Ferrell had his moments, especially during his rookie year, he did not pan out for the Raiders. He was released after four years, tallying 105 total tackles and 10 sacks with the Silver and Black.

The Dolphins will be his fourth team in three years. He will have to earn a spot in training camp, as he is way behind the depth chart.

Ferrell, who had 25 total tackles and four sacks last season, could be a low-risk, high-reward addition for Miami, which has languished at the bottom half of the league’s defensive rankings.
