Dolphins Sign First-Year Running Back to Active Roster

Quarterback Cam Miller isn’t the only first-year player that the Dolphins have poached from an opposing team’s practice squad as of late. After Miami signed Miller off of the Las Vegas Raiders’ squad on Thursday, it was reported on Friday that it has inked a rookie running back to its 53-man roster.

Specifically, the Dolphins have added undrafted back Donovan Edwards to the fold just hours away from their season finale against a vaunted New England Patriots squad that’s vying for the AFC’s No. 1 seed. Edwards, 22, was signed off the Washington Commanders’ practice squad. He went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft following a four-season stint at the University of Michigan, during which he compiled 2,251 rushing yards, 19 rushing touchdowns, and averaged 45.0 rushing yards per contest.

But the Dolphins don’t exactly stand out as a team that’s in dire need of another threat on the ground, as running back De’Von Achane has been one of the more dangerous backs in all of football this season. He’s already accumulated 1,350 rushing yards in his third pro season with one game still left to play on Miami’s schedule, and Achane also ranks fifth in the league in total rushing yards.

Still, it seems possible that Edwards could get some run time in Sunday’s season finale, considering how little the team has to play for at this stage. With Miami already mathematically eliminated from securing a playoff berth, it wouldn’t have anything to lose by handing it off to him early and often and letting him show what he can do.

Hopefully, if Edwards does see the field quite a bit on Sunday, he plays well enough to the point where he convinces the Dolphins that they should keep him on their roster past the end of this season. Maybe he’ll prove to be an effective fallback option behind Achane at the position.
