Dolphins Sign Former Falcons Running Back
Last week, the Miami Dolphins announced several roster moves, including the signing of running back Carlos Washington Jr. There are probably lots of Dolphins fans asking themselves who exactly Washington is, as he’s not a household name by any means. For anyone looking to learn more about the back Miami just picked up, here’s a bit of an introduction.
Washington, 27, went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft after playing in 35 total collegiate contests with two small football programs — the University of New Hampshire and Southeastern Louisiana University.
He was then picked up as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons and spent the majority of the 2024 and 2025 seasons on their practice squad and signed to future/reserve deals. The Maryland native ultimately didn’t play any meaningful snaps for the Falcons’ active roster in that time, as although he did appear in two regular-season games for Atlanta, he’s still looking for his very first career rushing attempt at the highest level.
A lack of opportunity defined Washington’s Falcons tenure, and all signs point to his time in Miami playing out in a similar fashion. After all, there are three running backs, including De’Von Achane — one of the NFL’s best — Jaylen Wright, and Ollie Gordon II, clearly ahead of him on the depth chart. He’s not getting snaps ahead of those guys unless they’re down for the count and hurt.
Realistically, if Washington does end up making the final roster somehow, it will probably be by the skin of his teeth as the Dolphins’ RB4, but the more likely outcome is that he lands on the Dolphins’ practice squad. There are simply too many cooks in the kitchen for the Dolphins at the all-important position for him to get significant burn in 2026, but hopefully, he can still make the most of his time with the team in other ways.
