The Miami Dolphins have a few major irons in the fire. Between the contract standoff with tight end Jonnu Smith and the pending separation from cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Miami has some business to sort through in the weeks ahead.
The Ramsey saga has been a centerpiece of Miami's offseason nearly the entire league calendar year — the news broke that the two parties would be going their separate ways about one month after the league year opened in March. But, courtesy of a renewed contract that Ramsey egged the Dolphins to give him last summer, the prospect of moving on from Ramsey is easier said than done.
Ramsey is unlikely to care — he's got his fully-guaranteed salary to look forward to one way or another. The Dolphins? They'd prefer to get something of substance for a still very good player who just so happens to be playing on a hefty salary in 2025. The result is a drawn-out process that has seen Miami holding out for a little more bend in the offers they're fielding.
Among the teams most often tied to Ramsey? The Los Angeles Rams. Sean McVay hasn't shied away from their appetite for adding Ramsey back into the mix but continues to posture that the hurdles (read: money) are steep.
“Definitely don’t want to rule anything out because we’re always open-minded to onboarding and acquiring quality players and people like (Ramsey) if we’re able to do that, but there would be some obstacles that are real that are in the place of maybe preventing that from occurring." - Sean McVay during Rams minicamp regarding adding Jalen Ramsey
Ramsey, after not attending the Dolphins' offseason program and being excused from mandatory minicamp, is working to keep himself ready for the season and his training accommodations won't do anything to dispel the buzz around a reunion with the Rams.
Ramsey has been training at UCLA's Wasserman Football Center.
After spending several years with the Rams, Ramsey may simply be "home" and finding a convenient place to stay in football shape. His home-buying process in California was highlighted when the Rams were a part of the joint Hard Knocks series alongside the Los Angeles Chargers back in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, after all.
Perhaps the logistics of living out west are simply easier for Ramsey this summer. But until the Dolphins find a home for Ramsey that isn't in Los Angeles, the dots will continue to be connected between the parties that a reunion is ultimately brewing. If it does, McVay's comments underscore that the Rams are going to need the Dolphins to break out the checkbook and buy down his compensation in order to make it happen.
