Frank Smith has been an NFL assistant coach for more than a decade, but the Miami Dolphins will be the first team to make him an offensive coordinator.
According to ESPN's Marcel Louis-Jacques, Smith has been tabbed to work with new head coach Mike McDaniel, who will call Miami's plays. Other coaches on the Dolphins' brand new coaching staff include wide receivers coach Wes Welker and offensive line coach Matt Applebaum.
Smith, 40, broke into the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 2010 and spent five seasons as New Orleans' assistant offensive line coach. He then spent three seasons each with the Chicago Bears and Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders as a tight ends coach. Most recently, Smith spent the 2021 season as the Los Angeles Chargers' run game coordinator and offensive line coach.
The Dolphins' run game could use some work after finishing the 2021 with the third-fewest rushing yards in the NFL and the second fewest yards per rushing attempt. The offensive line also struggled to pass protect, allowing quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa and Jacoby Brissett to be sacked a combined 39 times.
