The Miami Dolphins went into the 2025 offseason with three off-ball linebackers hitting free agency. But before one could sign elsewhere, the Dolphins were able to bring back one of their own.
According to Fox Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are set to re-sign linebacker Tyrel Dodson to a two-year, $8.25 million deal. Schultz also reported that the Dolphins were prioritizing Dodson, who had opportunities elsewhere but wanted to return to Miami.
The 26-year-old has spent his five seasons in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks. In the first three years of his career, he was a backup with the Bills.
After joining Seattle in the 2024 offseason, he was cut after just nine games. A day after his release from Seattle, the Dolphins claimed Dodson off of waivers.
In Miami, Dodson only started three games but made an immediate impact.
Dodson allowed a 66.7 passer rating, allowing 125 yards and one touchdown on 21 targets. But he made his mark generating turnovers.
In just eight games, he had three interceptions, the only generated turnovers of his career. Those three interceptions led the Dolphins in interceptions for the 2024 season. Dodson was in Miami for just eight games.
According to Pro Football Focus, the Dolphins linebacker had the highest coverage grade of any Dolphin with an 87.8 grade. All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey had the next highest grade, but Ramsey had just a 71.9 coverage grade.
Dodson made an immediate impact on the Dolphins' defense in just eight games. With his two-year deal, there is reason to be optimistic to see what he can do in a full season with the Dolphins.
