The Miami Dolphins managed to address their core underlying roster need during this year's NFL draft, defensive tackle; selecting three players in the position over the course of the three days of the draft.
However, they neglected one potential position of need - offensive tackle. Despite second round pick, Jonah Saviineea's history of playing on the exterior of the offensive line in college, he will almost certainly be deployed at guard during his time in the pros due to concerns about his athleticism.
And after the retirement of 5 x Pro Bowler, Terron Armstead, during this offseason, the Dolphins have a vacant position as Tua Tagovailoa's front-side protector - given that he is left handed.
Whilst the team has 2024 second round pick Patrick Paul currently starting in that role, after some shaky performances in his rookie year, head coach Mike McDaniel could be unwilling to hand the role of "Tua Protector" to a player who could well find himself exposed by high-end edge rushers.
So a trade suggestion for the Dolphins would pair them with New Orleans Saints tackle, Trevor Penning, who could see himself out of a job come the end of training camp after the team drafted tackles, Kelvin Banks Jr. and Taliese Fuaga in the first round of back-to-back drafts in 2024 and 2025.
Although Penning has not exactly been the gold standard of tackles around the league, he was serviceable in standing in for the injured Ryan Ramczyk in 2024, improving from his very uneven 2023 form.
Penning would be a low cost free agent - coming in at just a $4.5 million cap hit in 2025 - for whom it would not cost the Dolphins a lot to get. And it gives Miami competition for that front side tackle position beyond essentially handing the job to Patrick Paul.
And given Penning's generally decent play, it at least gives the Dolphins a floor at a critical position, ahead of what could be a very important season for the futures of both McDaniel and Tagovailoa.
Dolphins get: Trevor Penning
Saints get: 2026 sixth round pick
