Dolphins' trade of WR Tyreek Hill is long overdue

The winless Miami Dolphins are a mess. Thursday night's 31-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills (3-0) was a valiant effort, but after losing to the Indianapolis Colts (2-0) and New England Patriots (1-1) to begin the 2025 season, the benefit of the doubt is gone.

It's impossible to pinpoint a single factor or player for Miami's struggles, but what's clear is that change must be made.

It starts with superstar WR Tyreek Hill

After a down 2024-25 season that saw Hill fail to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the first time since 2019-20, emotions boiled over. We all saw and heard his "I'm out" comments following last season's Week 18 loss to the New York Jets, which should have led to an offseason breakup. Instead, the Dolphins have held on to him, and unsurprisingly, it's only getting worse. Hill has had a decent start to the 2025-26 campaign, though not producing to the level that we've come to expect.

It's not because Hill has lost a step; the five-time All-Pro still has it. We saw it on full display when he shook Bills cornerback Christian Benford in the end zone on Thursday.

So why do Hill's numbers remain down? Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had tremendous chemistry with the eight-time Pro Bowler upon his arrival from the Kansas City Chiefs. As Tagovailoa has changed his style of play, everyone's production has plummeted. Hill has just 198 receiving yards and one touchdown through the season's first three weeks.

Tagovailoa has, of course, had multiple concussions and, as a result, has become less willing to hang onto the ball in the pocket. He's resorted to the quick passing game, often ending up with the ball being intercepted or thrown away as the pass rush gets to him.

In just three weeks, we've already seen Tagovailoa underthrow deep balls and sail passes on intermediate routes where Hill is wide open, having created plenty of separation.

Tyreek Hill's frustration is evident

While the 31-year-old has yet to let his frustration spill over, the Dolphins need to move on before it reaches that point. It's inevitable and should have been done already.

It's early, but this season is almost lost, so it's time to acquire draft capital and build towards the future. Not only does it make sense for Miami, but Hill deserves an opportunity to thrive elsewhere while at the top of his game.

The Chiefs, Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers are just some of the teams that would surely kick tires if the Dolphins make Hill available.
