Former NFL wide receiver and current Miami Dolphins wide receivers coach Wes Welker generated headlines when he said last week that wideout Tyreek Hill is a better overall receiver than Hall of Famer Randy Moss.
Welker expanded on that take after Hill recorded five catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's blowout 45-15 win over the Washington Commanders that improved the Dolphins to 9-3.
"I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that he has such a full route tree," Welker told NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated while speaking about Hill. "His ability to break down and his ability with his speed, he’s the fastest guy out there, and he’s as fast as he needs to be on any given play. He gets open. He just goes and finds it."
According to ESPN stats, Hill began Monday leading the NFL with 1,481 receiving yards and 12 touchdown grabs on the season. Only Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers has more receptions (102) than Hill (93).
Some fans and analysts are campaigning for Hill to receive Most Valuable Player votes. As of Monday afternoon, oddschecker listed Hill tied for seventh among the betting favorites at +3000 odds to win MVP. To compare, Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was at +900 odds at that same time.
"It’s not coaching—it’s just being that good," Welker added about Hill. "It’s impressive to see. I can’t really explain it. I know we’ve tried to put the defense in conflict and different things like that. But the reason why there’s so much conflict is mainly because of him."
Hill will look to build upon what could be an award-winning campaign when Miami hosts the 4-8 Tennessee Titans next Monday night. On Monday afternoon, oddschecker had the Dolphins as 11.5-point favorites for that matchup.
