Dolphins Workout Five Offensive Linemen with Austin Jackson Injury

With the news that Dolphins starting right tackle Austin Jackson will be out multiple weeks and may not be ready for the start of the regular season, the Dolphins brought in five offensive linemen for a workout on Saturday as they look to add depth to their offensive line.

Here is a look at who Miami brought in.

Germain Ifedi: A 31-year-old former 1st round pick by Seattle in 2016 who hasn’t been a full-time starter since 2020. He has played for Seattle, Chicago, Buffalo, Atlanta, Detroit, and last season for Cleveland. Ifedi was out of the NFL in 2023, but started 7 games for Cleveland last season. He has played in 117 games, starting 90 of them. He played 524 snaps last season at left tackle and 13 snaps at right tackle. His PFF grades were: Overall grade of 48.6, ranking 119 out of 144 offensive tackles. Pass Blocking grade of 52.9, ranking 100 out of 144 offensive tackles. Run Blocking grade of 49.3, ranking 125 out of 144 offensive tackles.  He was called for 5 penalties and gave up 4 sacks last year.  In 2021, for the Bears, he played 421 snaps at right tackle, and was called for 4 penalties and gave up 2 sacks.

Chris Hubbard: A 34-year-old who went undrafted in 2013. He has played for Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Tennessee, San Francisco, and the NY Giants. Last season for the Giants, he started 3 games. All but one snap was at left tackle. In 2023 for the Titans, he started 9 games at right tackle and played 472 snaps. In 2023, at Right Tackle, his overall PFF grade was 68.2 and a pass-blocking grade of 67.8. Hubbard has played in 102 games, starting 61 since entering the NFL.

Zach Bailey: He will be 30 in November and went undrafted in 2019. He has only played in 2 career games, and he has zero starts. He played 9 total snaps all of last season, with the NY Jets, all at right tackle, and in those 9 snaps, he was called for one penalty.

Yodny Cajuste: A 29-year-old born and raised in Miami, FL, who was a 3rd round pick by the Patriots in 2019. He has played in 17 games, starting five, but hasn’t played in a game since 2022. He has only been on practice squads since then.

David Sharpe: A 4th round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2017, who will be 30 in October. He has played for Oakland, Houston, Washington, Baltimore, Carolina, and the NY Jets. He has played in 45 games, starting six. He hasn’t played in a game since 2023.

The issue the Dolphins have is that they have zero depth on the offensive line overall, but especially at offensive tackle, along with the fact that you can’t trust Austin Jackson to stay healthy.

Jackson only played in 2 games in 2022 and 8 games in 2024. He is the most injury-prone player on the entire team, including the quarterback.

Miami did sign Larry Borom as a free agent in the offseason to be the backup swing tackle, but he was underwhelming in Chicago and has had a pretty bad first two weeks of training camp.

Borom only played 33 snaps at right tackle last season, and none in 2023. His PFF grades both years were substandard to put it nicely and near the bottom of the league among all offensive tackles.

Borom will start in place of Austin Jackson, but if Miami does bring in someone like Hubbard or Ifedi there is a shot that by week 1 that will not be the case should Jackson still be out.

Miami also has Kion Smith, Jackson Carman, and Ryan Hayes as backup tackles, but they have no NFL resume to speak of and are not NFL starters in any way, should they be asked to fill in.
