Donald Trump Chickens Out of Buccaneers-Steelers Game
USA TODAY Network via Reuters Connect

Donald Trump reportedly planned to attend the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to CNN senior White House correspondent Kristen Holmes.

The matchup is scheduled for Tampa, approximately 220 miles from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach. However, Holmes subsequently reported that Trump would not attend, ending speculation about his appearance.

For Buccaneers fans, that might be the best news of the week. Raymond James Stadium has enough drama without the president turning a football game into another political spectacle.

From “Shut Up and Dribble” Crowd

Remember when conservatives told athletes to shut up and dribble? Apparently, political figures deserve a different standard when they want the spotlight. Sports stadiums belong to the fans, not politicians looking for applause, favorable headlines, or another carefully staged photo opportunity.

Trump’s reported change of plans raises an obvious question: What happened? Did the online backlash following the announcement make the trip less appealing? Did the Glazers refuse to rename the pirate ship in his honor? Perhaps somebody reminded him that not every crowd is guaranteed to deliver the reception he expects.

Those are questions worth asking, even if the actual reason for his absence remains unconfirmed. Until an explanation emerges, the speculation can remain speculation.

A Presidency Running on Empty

Trump’s political standing has faced substantial criticism, and his approval ratings are lower than his IQ. His critics see a president whose political influence is increasingly vulnerable, regardless of how enthusiastically his supporters defend him. For a politician who thrives on attention, a less than welcoming appearance can sometimes say more than a carefully choreographed entrance.

Trump is also an adjudicated sexual abuser and a convicted felon. Those are established legal outcomes, not merely insults invented by political opponents. His name has also appeared in reporting and documents connected to Jeffrey Epstein, but that fact alone does not establish criminal wrongdoing. But he is at the very least providing cover for those involved in the Epstein pedophile ring.

The public deserves transparency about Epstein’s network and accountability for anyone proven to have participated in or enabled abuse. Allegations of a cover-up deserve scrutiny, but evidence matters more than insinuation. No one should receive immunity from legitimate questions because of wealth, political power, or connections. Especially a guy who as we said earlier is an adjudicated rapist who brags about grabbing women by their privates.

Raymond James Stadium Doesn’t Need A Political Circus

Football should be about football, especially for fans who spend their hard-earned money supporting the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay has its own storylines, its own frustrations, and plenty of reasons for supporters to focus on the field. The last thing the stadium needs is another political spectacle competing for attention.

So, with Trump now staying away, Buccaneers fans can enjoy the game without his presence becoming the main attraction. Nobody needs a presidential cameo to make Steelers-Bucs interesting. And Raymond James Stadium certainly doesn’t need to become another backdrop for Trump’s endless pursuit of attention.

In other news, Aaron Rodgers is probably crying.
