Draft Strategy for the Dolphins
As teams prepare for the upcoming 2026 NFL draft, front offices typically use two major strategies when making draft decisions.
The first is to pick the best available player on your turn.
The other popular strategy is to choose based on need.
In the case of the Dolphins, we have outlined the many needs this roster must address to be remotely competitive in the 2026 season.
To outline these needs once again, we are talking about wide receiver, tight end, offensive and defensive lines, cornerback, safety, and edge rusher.
So, it’s clear that Miami’s 2026 draft strategy is to select the best available player, given the team’s many roster needs.
Chances are very good that the BPA will address one of these needs.
And it likely won’t happen just in this year’s draft, but in the 2027 draft as well.
This assumes that Jon-Eric Sullivan is significantly more adept at recognizing talented players who can contribute sooner rather than later.
We have become accustomed to former GM Chris Grier whiffing on so many players that our expectations have been tainted, and we truly are in the dark, judging what the new regime will do.
But fellow Dolfans, it can’t be much worse than what has been occurring in past years under the direction of Grier, so I, for one, will eagerly look forward to this draft with as much hope as possible.
With tempered expectations, this rebuild will be a long process that will take at least two years to field a roster that can compete with the league’s top teams, and we won’t have salary cap money until 2028 to afford quality free agents.
Godspeed to Jon-Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley as they navigate the construction of this roster.
