With 20 seconds remaining in Sunday night's game between the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, New England's Andres Borregales prepared to attempt a go-ahead 52-yard field goal with the score tied 20-20.
Following the Patriots' thrilling 23-20 victory that improved them to 3-2 on the season, second-year New England quarterback Drake Maye made a hilarious admission about Borregales' kick.
"I couldn’t watch," Maye explained, according to Matt Vautour of MassLive. "It was just trust. Trust in him. I was looking down at the iPad at something I could have done on a run play in the last couple of plays."
Before the Patriots made Maye the third overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, analysts compared him to Bills star Josh Allen. As Mark Daniels of MassLive pointed out, Maye completed 13-of-14 passes for 184 yards in the second half of Sunday's contest to outdo Allen and hand the Bills (4-1) their first loss of the season.
In total, Maye connected on 22-of-30 pass attempts for 273 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions against the Bills. After the win, Borregales was able to laugh about how Maye handled what became a game-winning kick.
"Some people can’t watch," Borregales said.
"Drake Maye, amazing. I told you all, I love playing for this man," Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore said about his QB1 after the victory. "I love everything about him. I love how he carries himself. I love his style. Love his game. I know when Drake has the ball, he’s going to do something special."
Pro Football Reference stats show that Maye entered Monday ranked sixth in the NFL among qualified players with a 107.8 passer rating on the season. He's also fifth with 1,261 passing yards.
Per StatMuse, Maye ended the weekend ranked sixth in the league with 1,371 combined passing and rushing yards. He's tied for ninth with nine combined passing and rushing scores.
"Baller. Dog. He can do it all. Just give him time," New England defensive tackle Milton Williams added about Maye. "He’s going to put the ball where it needs to be. He’s going to get everybody lined up where they need to go. We’re trying to get turnovers and put the ball in their hands so they can score."
The Patriots next play at the 1-4 New Orleans Saints this coming Sunday. As of Monday morning, ESPN BET had New England as a 3.5-point favorite for that matchup.
