Drake Maye replacing Mac Jones in more ways than one

The New England Patriots wasted absolutely no time in scrubbing the remnants of the Mac Jones era.

In a post to X on Friday, the Patriots revealed the jersey numbers that their rookies will be wearing next season. Most notably, new Patriots quarterback Drake Maye will be wearing the No. 10 jersey.

Of course, No. 10 was the number that Jones wore throughout his Patriots career. It was also previously worn by New England QB predecessor Jimmy Garoppolo. At that time though, the Pats at least kept it out of commission for a full season before eventually giving it to Josh Gordon, Damiere Byrd and, later, Jones.

While obviously no one was ever expecting New England to retire the No. 10 for Jones, that is a pretty quick turnaround for the number to be repurposed less than two months after Jones got traded to another AFC team. Maye, the No. 3 overall pick by the Pats in this year’s draft, did wear No. 10 in college at North Carolina. But on Jones’ end, he has had no love for New England ever since being traded, and now it appears that the feeling is mutual.
