The New England Patriots entered the 2024 NFL Season with three new quarterbacks.

One was a veteran, while the other two were rookies.

Drake Maye was selected in the first round by the Patriots with many regarding him as the franchise's quarterback, but the team also selected another player in the same position late in the draft.

Joe Milton III heard his name called by New England in the sixth round, which was widely considered a shock since the team already drafted Maye.

Some of the people surprised hit close to home for Maye.

According to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, Maye's family was underwhelmed after finding out the Patriots decided to get another rookie quarterback.

“Indeed, a league source said last month at the NFL Combine that Maye’s family was not thrilled when Milton was drafted,” Volin said.

Although Milton would always be a bench player, Maye also found himself on the sidelines for most of the season.

Former head coach Jerod Mayo opted to go with Jacoby Brissett in the pocket, but Maye was eventually given his shot midway through the year.

Still, Milton was able to see the field when he put on a masterclass performance against the Buffalo Bills in Week 18, recording a passing and rushing touchdown in the 23-16 win.

Heading into the 2025 season, Maye and his family no longer have to worry about Milton competing for the starting position. Milton was traded to the Dallas Cowboys on April 3 with hopes of being the starter for his new team.
