Drew Bledsoe explains why Tom Brady was the 'worst backup QB'

The New England Patriots formerly inducted Tom Brady into the team's Hall of Fame on Wednesday. It wasn't a roast, but former Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Bledsoe threw a friendly jab at his ex-teammate for stealing his job.

Like many on hand who suited up with Brady, Bledsoe spoke glowingly about the seven-time Super Bowl champion before hilariously calling him "the worst backup quarterback in the history of the NFL."

"You never understood that when I got healthy you were supposed to go sit the hell down," Bledsoe said.

Upon Brady's arrival in 2000, no one would have believed the sixth-round pick would soon unseat Bledsoe as the starter on his way to becoming arguably the best quarterback ever.

Bledsoe was the face of the franchise. Picked No. 1 overall in the 1993 NFL Draft, he had led the team to a berth in Super Bowl XXXI and seemed like he might be a Patriot for life after inking a 10-year, $103M contract ahead of the 2001 campaign.

However, in Week 2, he suffered a devastating chest injury following a hit from New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis, putting him on the shelf for several weeks.

Brady stepped in as his replacement, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the first chapter of a Hall of Fame career, Brady finished the season 11-3 before leading the Patriots to a win in Super Bowl XXXVI over the then-St. Louis Rams.

As for Bledsoe, he was fully recovered from his injury in Week 10 but never took another snap for the Patriots. In the offseason, New England traded him to the Buffalo Bills, where he'd spend three seasons, making the Pro Bowl in 2002 before playing the final two years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys.
