Drew Brees Sends Message About Saints' QB Situation

The New Orleans Saints have been searching for a franchise quarterback since Drew Brees retired. So far, they have not had much luck finding one.

In their latest effort, the Saints signed Derek Carr to a big four-year, $150 million contract in free agency. Just two years into that deal, Carr announced his retirement this offseason due to a shoulder injury.

At this point, New Orleans has three young quarterbacks on its roster. Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and Jake Haener are prepared to compete for the starting job. All three have talent, but there are also questions about all of them as well.

Speaking of Brees, the legendary quarterback spoke out about his old team's situation. He revealed his honest thoughts on the upcoming competition.

"I've seen what the fans have seen, ya know. I haven't really gone deep into his college film. I think what's the most impressive to me is his adversity," Brees said of Shough.

What adversity has Shough been through? He played six years in college, suffering a broken collarbone in 2021, a re-injury of the collarbone in 2022, and he fractured his fibular in 2023. Now, he's ready to begin his NFL career after overcoming all of those things.

Brees thinks Shough will be facing stiff competition from the other two young signal callers as well.

"I'm not giving anybody the job right now, I know we drafted Tyler Shough, but I'm sure [Jake] Haener and [Spencer] Rattler have something to say about that," he said.

Kellen Moore, the Saints' first-year head coach, has his work cut out for him. Turning New Orleans back into a serious NFC contender will be no easy task.

Finding a legitimate starting quarterback will be step number one. Brees doesn't have an answer for who that will be, but he seems to be high on all three young players.
