As the New York Giants continue to test the limits of Murphy’s Law, fans are left looking ahead to the offseason and around for the silver linings of a lost season.
The rebuild will continue on Sunday, when the Giants host the New Orleans Saints and young players hope to make a mark on a roster with plenty of open spots.
By way of injury and inconsistency, the opportunities to earn a role on next year’s team is present. Among those vying for playing time is linebacker Dyontae Johnson.
While Johnson hasn’t officially received the green light from head coach Brian Daboll, the team activated his 21-day window to return to action, meaning it’s only a matter of time before the linebacker sees the field.
Johnson was a standout this summer, including in the preseason opener against the Detroit Lions. However, he suffered an ankle injury in the exhibition and was placed on injured reserve.
Between linebackers Bobby Okereke, Micah McFadden, and Darius Muasau taking priority over the second-year linebackers, there simply wasn’t much reason for New York to rush him back. Now, with little to play for, lesser-known contributors are making their way onto the field.
Johnson’s initial role may be a small one, potentially contributing on special teams in place of veteran linebacker Matthew Adams. It’s worth noting that Johnson flashed enough physicality to see reps on early downs. His athletic profile isn’t particularly promising, but he exceeded the low expectations most had for him this summer.
Having spent last season on the Giants practice squad, there’s a level of familiarity present, and Okereke’s injury keeping him out of practice makes the unit that much thinner, should he not be able to go in Week 14.
It may only turn into a minor role, but the chance to put quality special teams reps on tape is valuable for someone who is yet to see regular season action. Expect to see him on the field sometime soon, with his NFL debut remaining a possibility for Sunday afternoon.
