We don't watch a ton of HBO's Hard Knocks series. After a while, things become so predictable that you could write some of the script yourself, but in truth, when we we do tune in, we enjoy the product. We even heard Liev Schreiber say something while watching an earlier episode that we'd like to borrow for the sake of this conversation about the Philadelphia Eagles' practice squad.
Being a member is sort of like sitting in football limbo. You're on the team. You collect a check but won't dress for the game on Sundays.
That isn't an exact quote, but understand where we're coming from. Being a scout team member allows Philly to continue working with a player rather than cutting him. It lets them house an additional 16 players or in the BIrds' case 17. Laekin Vakalahi is given a special exemption by joining the squad through the International Player Pathway Program.
We'd imagine each player wants more for his playing career though. We totally respect that, but for now, here's the avenue they'll need to take to see their NFL career continue.
Following a busy Monday and Tuesday, things didn't slow down for the Eagles on Wednesday. Each NFL team monitored the NFL's waiver wire.
As was the case during the NFL Draft, Philly ranked 22nd in the claiming order. The results of every team action were revealed after the claiming period ended at noon EST. The Eagles had decided against claiming anyone available and began forming their practice squads shortly afterward.
Here's a list of the practice squad members and the reports we've come across to substantiate their mention
1:00 pm - Defensive end and Carolina native Tarron Jackson signs with the Panthers while center Dylan McMahon has been signed to the Eagles' practice squad.
12:54 pm - The Eagles have signed tight end EJ Jenkins and safety Andre' Sam to their practice squad.
12:45 pm - None of the Eagles’ roster cuts were claimed off waivers, and Philly didn't sign any waivers from other teams. The Eagles can begin the formation of their practice squad.
These guys probably don't want to hear our advice, but that's okay. We have decided to give them some anyway.
Believe in yourselves. Stay in shape. Keep grinding. You never know when your number will be called, so you have to be ready when it is. You're just one injury away from being back in the conversation.
