Eagles Announce Saquon Barkley News After First Loss

The Philadelphia Eagles came into Sunday's matchup with the Denver Broncos as winners of 20 of their previous 21 games dating back to last season, including the playoffs. However, the Broncos picked up a 21-17 road victory after rallying from a 14-point deficit, handing the Eagles their first loss since Week 16 of the 2024 campaign.

Denver held Philadelphia to 45 rushing yards on 11 carries, with 2024 NFL rushing champion Saquon Barkley getting 30 of them. The superstar also recorded three catches for 58 receiving yards and a touchdown, with most of that production coming on a 47-yard scoring reception in the third quarter.

Barkley has four total touchdowns in five games this season, but he hasn't been as efficient as last year. The 28-year-old ranks fourth in the NFL with 83 carries, but just 22nd with 267 rushing yards (3.2 yards per carry). He nearly broke the league record with 2,005 yards on 345 carries (5.8 yards per carry) in 2024.

Additionally, the Eagles announced an unfortunate update about Barkley on Monday via their social media.

They listed the three-time Pro Bowler as a "DNP" (did not practice) on Monday's estimated practice report due to a knee injury. That means that Philadelphia didn't practice, but he wouldn't have participated if it had.

The Eagles next face the New York Giants on "Thursday Night Football," which is Barkley's former team. The 2024 NFL Offensive Player of the Year has two more days to heal before Thursday's road contest, giving him less time than normal.

Saquon Barkley Has Been Durable for Eagles

Barkley hasn't missed a game due to injury since he started his Philadelphia tenure last season. The veteran rested during the team's Week 18 game against the Giants last season, but he's appeared in every other contest.

Barkley has played at least 13 games each season since 2021. The Penn State product tore his ACL in Week 2 of the 2020 campaign, but that was the only time he was out for the majority of the year.

If Barkley can't play on Thursday, the Eagles may have to rely more on their air attack. Quarterback Jalen Hurts ranks just 22nd in football with 889 passing yards, but they still have talented pass-catchers such as A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert at their disposal. Smith is tied for 18th with 25 catches, while Goedert is tied for fifth with four touchdown receptions. Additionally, Brown is a three-time All-Pro.

Thursday's game will start at 8:15 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video.
