Little did the Philadelphia Eagles know that a team on the opposite side of the country could have the franchise stressing about the future. Well, maybe not yet, but it's coming.
On Monday, the San Francisco 49ers gave linebacker Fred Warner a three-year, $63 million contract extension that'll run through the 2029 season. The deal includes $56 million guaranteed which places him at number one among the highest paid linebackers in the NFL.

It's a well-deserved raise for the linebacker after making four Pro Bowls and first-team All-Pro selections in his seven-year career. While this will have ramifications for the Eagles on the field, it also will hit their pocketbooks in the next few years.
Examining Philadelphia's current financial situation, they have been spoiled on the defensive side of the ball with only two defensive players averaging $10 million or more per season on their current contracts. Bryce Huff and Zack Baun are averaging $17 million per year, as Huff's agreement is up in 2026 and Baun's is up in 2027.
While it seems unlikely that Huff will get another contract with Philadelphia due to his poor performance in 2024, Baun presents an interesting situation. If he keeps playing like he did and stays in the defensive player of the year conversation, the next two seasons, the Eagles will be forced to make him the highest-paid defender in the NFL. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman does not typically pay big money for linebackers, as the Baun deal this offseason went against what he has done in the past.
The bigger concern is on a position that Roseman and the Eagles love: the defensive line. Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter will also need big pay days which presents a nightmare scenario of trying to keep both.
Davis secured his fifth-year option on his rookie deal as he will receive $12.9 million in 2026. Carter will be due to get his fifth-year option picked up as well which will most likely be in the same range as Davis' pay in 2027.
Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones has the highest average salary per year among interior linemen at around $31 million. That's the range the Eagles will be potentially facing for Davis and Carter.
It's too soon to discuss players in the secondary, but guys like Reed Blankenship, Quinyon Mitchell, and Cooper DeJean will be in the running for big pay days in the next three to four years. Blankenship's contract ends after the 2025 season and could be among the highest-paid safeties.
While the team won't have to worry about it this year, Warner's contract did not do much to quiet the chatter about other Eagles defenders. The offensive side of the ball has all been paid, but Philadelphia has some tough decisions to make after 2025.
