Eagles' CB2 position battle at camp has fans witnessing sad downfall to veteran

The mystery behind the Philadelphia Eagles' CB2 position battle has been one many in the fan base has been watching daily, but it has taken an interesting turn to it.

At Monday's practice, many observers noted that Kelee Ringo was working out with the second and third teams at training camp with no first-team reps for the first time. It was Cooper DeJean and Adoree' Jackson with a mix of Jakorian Bennett and Mac McWilliams getting some reps.

Tuesday's practice was a bit more of the same, as DeJean was on the outside in the base defense. Jackson and Bennett were also getting first-team reps, but again, no Ringo. Bleeding Green Nation reporter Brandon Lee Gowton discussed in his training camp observations what he believes has happened with Ringo.

"Jackson was in position to blow up Cooper after a short reception (reminder: the Eagles aren’t actually tackling). The veteran cornerback made a leaping pass breakup on a short Hurts throw to Goedert.

Jakorian Bennett, not Ringo, rotated in for Jackson with the first-team defense. I didn’t write his name down in my notes during team drills but he did break up a short Hurts pass during 1-on-1s.

I wonder if Ringo’s confidence is shaken right now. Not hard to understand how that could be the case after he entered camp as the favorite to start and he’s since been demoted. During a special team drill where the Eagles were having gunners practice batting the ball out of the end zone to prevent touchbacks, Ringo totally flubbed an opportunity where the ball would’ve been downed inside the three-yard line. Later, Ringo allowed multiple Kyle McCord completions to Elijah Cooks. Ringo took reps during the end of practice developmental drills for the second day in a row."

What should Eagles fans make of Ringo?

The reality is Ringo has been a backup for the last two years for a reason. He's a lengthy corner that the Eagles were hoping would eventually become a starter, but he's not ready.

He's been targeted 20 times in his career, allowing 12 completions for 215 yards and two touchdowns. That's 17.9 yards per reception allowed with a passer rating of 109.4 allowed in 34 games.

It's a shame that it hasn't worked out for Ringo as he's got the potential to be great, but it may simply be he'll never be ready. He might always be a backup.

Jackson's good practice on Tuesday is a good sign that the Eagles are inching closer to finding their CB2. It's good to see Bennett get more reps after his nice performance in the Eagles' 22-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns last week.

DeJean getting reps at outside is not a bad thing either, but the Eagles won't run much of their defense in the base. That's not what Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio wants to do.

Eagles fans will have to wait for Friday to see what the defense looks like with the new rotation at CB2 and which guy can take the job by the horns and run with it.
