Eagles' competitive position battle at camp might be slipping away from rookie

One preseason game and three weeks of training camp in and the Philadelphia Eagles have some big decisions to make at key positions. There might be a position battle that is not as close as some might have thought.

Philly is looking for their third-string quarterback between Dorian Thompson-Robinson and rookie Kyle McCord. All indications have been that DTR is winning the job, as shown in NBC Sports Philadelphia's  Dave Zangaro report from Saturday's practice.

"In the developmental drill to end practice, the situation was 1st-and-goal from the 10-yard line when Dorian Thompson-Robinson hit Taylor Morin in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Morin was able to get both feet down, although the defense didn’t like the call. Without refs on the field Saturday, assistant GM Jon Ferrari signaled touchdown. (And I was close enough to the play to agree with him.)"

"Kyle McCord had an errant throw that missed way wide during team drills. He has clearly been outplayed by Dorian Thompson-Robinson thus far."

Should DTR get the third string QB job over McCord?

Even Thursday's 34-27 win for the Eagles over the Cincinnati Bengals in the first preseason game was a good indicator that DTR might have the advantage over McCord. Thompson-Robinson completed five of eight passes for 58 yards while McCord went one of five for eight yards and an interception.

It's clear that McCord is going to need some more work and development before he can be where guys like Jalen Hurts, Tanner McKee, and DTR are in their development. To be fair to McCord, that was his first NFL game and he was working with the third and fourth stringers so it isn't going to be perfect.

Thompson-Robinson might be a better fit for what the Eagles want, as he shares a similar style to Hurts, being a mobile quarterback. DTR can make great plays with his feet when he needs to.

Before camp, some might have thought that McCord would have the advantage since the Eagles drafted him, and Thompson-Robinson has not had a stellar career when he was with the Cleveland Browns. It looks like it could be McCord chasing DTR for the QB3 job and trying to avoid a practice squad spot, which might not be the worst thing in the world for the rookie.
